Carbon fibre top decks for 1:10 electric touring cars: Maximum performance thanks to targeted flex

In professional RC car racing, especially in the 1:10 electric touring car (TC) class, the chassis is far more than just a base plate. Today, the flex behaviour of the vehicle plays a key role in tuning the vehicle. This is where the carbon fibre top deck plays a decisive role.

In this category you will find a precise selection of top decks for competition chassis from brands such as Mugen Seiki, Xray, Awesomatix and Yokomo to perfectly adapt your setup to the track conditions.

What does a carbon fibre top deck do?

The top deck connects the front and rear bulkheads and stabilises the chassis against torsion (twisting) and longitudinal movement. Whilst the main chassis forms the base, the top deck acts as the "spring" of the overall system.

The importance of "flex"

When an RC car drives through a bend, enormous centrifugal forces are at work. A certain amount of chassis twist(flex) ensures that the tyres can build up more mechanical grip. A rigid top deck, on the other hand, ensures more direct steering and more stability at high speeds.

Different top deck types and their purposes

Depending on the material thickness and design, the top deck has a massive influence on the handling of your 1:10 touring car:

1. One-piece top decks (standard)

  • Characteristics: Classic design that rigidly connects the front and rear axles.

  • Application: Ideal for carpeted tracks (high grip). It offers maximum precision and prevents the car from becoming "tippy" when there is a lot of grip.

  • Advantage: Very consistent driving behaviour and direct steering response.

2. Split top decks (split top decks)

  • Characteristics: Consist of two separate parts (front and rear).

  • Application: Perfect for tarmac or tracks with little grip (low grip).

  • Advantage: The chassis can twist more in the centre. This generates significantly more mechanical grip and allows the car to absorb bumps better.

3. Top decks with different material thicknesses

  • 1.6 mm / 2.0 mm: Thinner decks offer more flex for slippery conditions.

  • 2.2 mm / 2.5 mm: Thicker decks increase the stiffness for extremely fast layouts or modified classes.

Tuning tip: Influence the flex with screws

Did you know that you can change the behaviour of your top deck without changing it?

  • More screws: Increase the stiffness (less grip, more precision).

  • Fewer screws (e.g. omit the centre screw): Increase the flex (more grip, softer ride feel).

Why carbon fibre (carbon)?

There is no alternative to carbon fibre in the RC sector, as it offers an extremely high stiffness-to-weight ratio. It also has excellent rebound behaviour: After twisting in a bend, the material immediately returns to its original shape without bending permanently (as could be the case with aluminium).

The right top deck for your model

Whether you are looking for a spare part for your Xray X4, a tuning part for the Mugen MTC3 or a special flex deck for the Awesomatix A800RR - make sure it fits your model specifically. A precisely fitting top deck guarantees tension-free installation, which is essential for symmetrical driving behaviour (tweak-free).
