Introducing our SlimFlex Carbon Chassis for the new Mugen MTC2!
The Mugen MTC2 sports a unique chassis design which is already very low profile. In this case we decided to work on the flex point of the chassis, ensuring we could optimise the flex, and also the rigidity of the chassis.
One major change on the SlimFlex chassis is the removal of the "through" spool and diff cutouts. We have pocketed these only 1mm deep, which provides a more rigid front and rear. This directs the flex back the the centre of the chassis for more consistent handling. The MTC2 has no shock towers to brace the bulkheads, leading to excessive bulkhead flex, giving more steering but also making the car inconsistent. Thanks to the pocketed cutouts, there is now significant less horizontal flex between the bulkheads, so you can run without braces, or with thinner braces such as our Med Flex Link or Bulkhead/Topdeck Flex Dampeners and not get as much flex in the bulkheads on the horizontal axis, but maintain the "caster flex" to increase steering. As well as this, the pocketed cutouts also improve aerodynamics by not allowing as much air up into the chassis, which ultimately improves the downforce.
We have also removed the 0.25mm recess on the bulkheads, motormount and suspension mounts. In our view this recess significantly reduces the strength of the holes in the chassis due to the removal of the outer layer (strongest layer) of the carbon. This reduces the amount of material under the screw and also exposing the fibres, making the screws much more prone to pulling through the chassis during a crash. Removal of this also allows use of our brand new Roll Centre Shim Plates!
Finally, the chassis profile has been modified to move the overall flex point of the chassis forward. With the Mugen front profile being significantly wider than the rear, we have widened the rear profile to a more normal width relative to the front of the chassis. This shifts the flex point forward, stiffening the rear of the chassis ultimately resulting in more steering which is almost always required on asphalt! This widening also increases the strength of the chassis around the shock mounting post which is normally very exposed on the standard chassis.
All of these features combined bring you a chassis which we believe provides more steering and corner speed, whilst keeping the car easy to drive and stable.
Our chassis are precision cut and countersunk on our CNC machine, in house in Australia from high quality 3K 2.2mm carbon.
